  1. Like the other guy said, you must have a HighDefinition ‘ready’ tv or HiDef capable tv. If by analog you mean that you have regular, ‘analog’ cable service with just the coaxial cable going to your tv, then you have some options to get HiDef programming.
Check with your local cable company to see if they offer High Definition programming, and they will send you a different kind of cable box. You will notice on the back of this cable box that there are several different kinds of output (component, dvi, hdmi, and the regular coaxial). You should also have these different styles of inputs on your LCD TV. To view HiDef TV, you will have to use the component connection (5 cables), the dvi connection (not too familiar with it), or the best connection, HDMI (a small, ‘slot’ type of connector for video and audio).
You may live in an area where HiDef programming is broadcast via antenna feed (basically the old ‘rabbit ears’, but they make a special antenna for HiDef feed and you only will get a few HiDef channels, if any at all).
The last option, and the only option in my case, is to go with one of the satellite companies. Dish Network offers more HiDef channels than anybody (33 right now I think). Again, they will give you a special HiDef box with specific cables for the box and your tv.
Now, after you watch some HiDef tv, I can assure you that standard (analog) tv is going to look so bad to you that you will hardly ever watch it again. Every channel will be changing format to HD within the next few years, so you are one of the lucky ones that are getting a head start.

  2. HDTV is a different signal type.. you can’t just ‘plug something in’ and have HDTV.
You could get an HD receiver, but your TV would still only display analog.
You need an HDTV for HD signals to be processed properly.
