We’re Going To Turn Our Loft Into A Home Theater. Should We Get A Lcd Tv Or One Of Those Overhead Projectors?

My husband wants the real movie theater feel, but I don't have any experience with the whole projector & screen thing. I'm a little bit hesitant to spend a bunch of money on something that we don't know the first thing about.
Has anybody done this? Would it be easier/better to just get a big LCD tv?

  1. Definitely consider getting a Home Theater Projector. A reasonably nice setup can be had for around the same price as an LCD TV. A loft is a great place for a Home Theatre as well, since you can probably reduce or eliminate any ambient light, which really helps with the real movie theater feel. Setting one up is a bit more involved than an LCD TV, but with a little bit of research, anyone can make a nice setup on their own.
Trust me, if you enjoy watching movies, a big screen makes a big difference. Just think of it like this: a 100inch screen is more than 4 times the size of a 47inch LCD screen! I say get the projector and prepare to spend a lot of time up there!

  2. Obviously, it would be easier to get a big screen LCD tv but if your husband wants a screen larger than currently available with flat screen tv’s then you will have to go with projection. The biggest problem with projectors though is fan noise – so make sure that whatever projector you buy you make sure that the fan noise isn’t loud enough to be annoying.

  3. A major problem with a loft setup is: do you have a singular wall that can be used as the projection screen? And if not, can you hang a screen from the loft ceiling? Unfortunately, many lofts have low level partition walls which do not prevent images and speaker noise from floating into another loft’s residence. So, you might as well be stuck with an LCD TV mounted on a floor stand.
If your loft floor plan is different than described above, please indicate the size of your wall; how speaker wire are to be hidden, etc. in another query at this forum–so we can continue to offer more suggestions.
On another subject, if you are looking for a bargain DLP projector for $250.00 check out the following offering at craigslist.org:http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/ele…
    Good luck!
