Your first two answers are full of s**t! A quick, quality source to answer your question is the HDTV article in the 3/08 Consumer Reports magazine, available at your local public library, if you don’t have a subscription. It will give you the basics, by pros, and even make some recommendations on brands, by performance AND reliability.
You can also read about buying an HDTV and the differences in technologies on-line at http://www.CNet.com – an excellent site that can be trusted. There is just too much to say on your subject to type out a complete, comprehensive answer.

unless you want to be extraordinary, please don’t go for a plasma. plasma takes more current than lcd. and they last only for few years. whereas lcd’s have a guaranteed long life and they give sharp images. lcd screen’s do not reflect light, which is a great thing. and it doesn’t cause any problems like burn in’s which plasma’s do encounter. buying an lcd would save you loads of money but giving you a truely amazing high-definition viewing. simple tip, if you’re looking for tv’s upto 40 inches, go for lcd without thinking. but above 40″ then i recommend plasma.
